Cathedral Peak circuit hike
September 16 @ 8:00 am - September 19 @ 5:00 pm
On this hike we get to walk up Organ pipes pass via Windy gap. I am sure that you can actually hear the Organ pipes playing a tune. This is quite a strenuous day starting at 1500m and finishing just below 3000m over 11km. However the views are worth it and we camp near a crystal clear stream below the mighty Cleft peak.
The next day we wonder up and over Cleft peak which at 3288m offers more incredible views. Then on and along the escarpment to camp above Mlambonja pass. We do have an option of also sleeping in Twins cave.
Now the adventure starts. My favorite day of hiking in the Drakensberg is along the Bell traverse. The views along this route are unbelievable but there are some exposed sections so it is weather and group dependent.
We start off around 3000m and at the end of the traverse we have lunch at the base of Cathedral Peak which is around 2500m after 4km with the top of Cathedral Peak being 3005m and so a climb up the free standing peak after lunch. Of course the views are unbelievable from up there.
After climbing Cathedral Peak we wonder back down and camp on a ridge below the peak which we can look at over a cup of tea and think about what we have just accomplished.
The last day is a gentle stroll back down to Cathedral Peak hotel taking about 3 hours.
