The Mnweni circuit
The Mnweni circuit is my favorite part of the Drakensberg and for this hike we start at the Mnweni Cultural center and head out to sleep at the base of Rockeries pass. Walking up the valley in the early spring is just amazing. All our winter birds come back for the start of our summer and there are flowers everywhere. Good for the soul.
The next day we go up Rockeries pass to have lunch by the Orange/Senqu river on it’s way to the Atlantic ocean over 2000km away. Then we camp near a huge Cape vulture colony while overlooking the stunning Mnweni area over 1000m below.
Day 3 is a walk behind the Saddle where we can have a dip in a lovely mountain pool. Then a early lunch with views from the Devils tooth in the North to Cathkin in the South. Lovely. After the view we head back down Ntonjelana pass to camp way down in the green valley.
The last day is fairly short back to our cars for a drive back to Pietermaritzburg. This whole area is full of Zulu culture and my porters love to show people their homes and of course there is dancing and singing.
