Hike Overview

(12-15 DAYS)
Difficulty: hike-difficulty-5
The spectacular Drakensberg Grand traverse hike is a 12-15 day hike traverses from the Northern Drakensberg to the Southern Drakensberg and is a life changing experience. Please click here to see when we are doing this hike again.   We start at the Ampitheater in the Northern Drakensberg and traverse the Drakensberg to Bushman’s Nek in the Southern Drakensberg. As a result we  cover about 230km of unbelievable mountain scenery while staying at an average of 3000m above sea level.

To do the Drakensberg Grand Traverse hike we need to walk up 5 major peaks.

First is Mount Aux Sources at 3287m near the top of the Ampitheater. Next up is Cleft peak overlooking the Cathedral peak range. The views from up there are lovely. Then we go up Champagne castle which at 3377m is the 3rd highest peak in South Africa. From up here we can look on to our next peak, Mafadi which is the highest peak in South Africa at 3450m. The last but highest peak we do is Thabana Ntlenyana which is the highest peak in Lesotho. It means " pretty little mountain" and is 3482m above sea level.   Most of the time we camp in tents near clear mountain streams but there some opportunities to sleep in caves. The route we take follows the escarpment edge and the watershed border between Lesotho and South Africa. This is where the views are the best.   Usually we spend 15 days to do this incredible hike so we can have a rest day on top of Organ pipes pass. Here we get resupplied with food. Then there is another rest day spent at the famous Sani pass.  After 12 days in the mountains it is great to sit in the highest pub in Africa. After Sani it is a 2 and a half day stroll to the finish at Bushman's nek police post. To take part in the Drakensberg Grand Traverse hike you need to have a great sense of adventure and a love of wild and open spaces. While a good level of fitness also makes the hike more fun.
